Workshop #1 – Introduction to Build-a-thon 2025

Welcome to the very first workshop of Build-a-thon 2025! Whether you’re a first-time hacker, a coding enthusiast, or a seasoned developer looking for your next challenge, this session will get you fully up to speed. Today, we’ll explore what a hackathon is, what makes Build-a-thon 2025 special, our exciting themes, and how you can get started coding and submitting your projects.

What Is a Hackathon and How Does It Work?

A hackathon is an event where people come together to build something amazing — usually in a short amount of time, like 24–72 hours. It’s called a “hack-a-thon” because you hack together creative solutions (not in the bad cybersecurity sense!) to solve real-world problems.

Teams — or sometimes solo participants — brainstorm an idea, design it, code it, and then present it at the end. The goal isn’t just to win; it’s to learn, create, and collaborate.

Typical hackathon flow:

  1. Kickoff & Theme Reveal: Learn what problem or category to build for.
  2. Ideation: Form teams, discuss ideas, and outline your project.
  3. Building Phase: Use whatever tools and languages you’re comfortable with to bring your idea to life.
  4. Submission & Judging: You’ll submit your project, demo video, and code repo for review.
  5. Showcase & Awards: Judges pick winners based on creativity, functionality, and impact.

Hackathons are high-energy, fast-paced, and fun — but most importantly, they’re a safe space to experiment and grow.

Themes for Build-a-thon 2025

Each theme offers endless possibilities. Choose one that inspires you — or mix a few together for something truly unique.

Education

Build solutions that make learning more engaging, accessible, or personalized. Think of apps that help teachers manage classrooms, AI tutors that adapt to student needs, or tools that bridge the education gap globally.

Examples:

  • A web app that gamifies STEM learning.
  • An AI chatbot that explains tough concepts simply.
  • A virtual classroom platform for rural areas.

Automation

Automation makes life easier and work more efficient. Your project might automate repetitive tasks, streamline workflows, or bring data-driven insights to everyday processes.

Examples:

  • A smart to-do list that prioritizes tasks automatically.
  • A bot that tracks expenses and creates visual reports.
  • An IoT solution that optimizes home energy use.

Green Earth

Build for the planet. Sustainability is no longer optional — it’s essential. Use code and creativity to design solutions that reduce waste, conserve energy, and promote eco-friendly practices.

Examples:

  • A recycling-tracking app.
  • A dashboard for monitoring personal carbon footprint.
  • A community-driven clean-up tracker.

Matchmaking & Team Formation

Don’t have a team yet? No problem!
We’ll be hosting a Matchmaking Session on our official Discord server to help you find your perfect teammates.

Date: November 6
Platform: Discord
Details: Participants can introduce themselves, share their skills and project ideas, and connect with others who share similar interests or complementary strengths.

Whether you’re a designer, developer, writer, or just curious to join a project — this is your chance to meet people and start building together. Keep an eye on the announcements channel for the invite link and session schedule.

How to Code + Recommended Resources

You don’t have to be a coding expert to participate. Here are some tools and resources to help you get started:

Tools of the Trade

  • VS Code: A lightweight and powerful code editor. Download it for free and install extensions for Python, HTML, and more.
    https://code.visualstudio.com/
  • Python: Great for beginners and perfect for automation or AI-driven projects. Learn with tutorials like W3Schools Python or Python.org Docs.
  • HTML & CSS: The backbone of web development. Build and style your front-end interface.
Try MDN Web Docs for everything you need.
  • JavaScript: Add interactivity to your website or app. JS lets you make dynamic, real-time web apps or even connect to APIs.
    Explore JavaScript.info or freeCodeCamp.

If you’re feeling adventurous, explore frameworks like React, Flask, or Django once you’re comfortable.

How to Submit Your Project

Submitting your project is how you showcase your hard work to judges and the community. Here’s how to do it right:

Devpost Tutorial

All Build-a-thon 2025 submissions will go through Devpost — our official hackathon platform.

  • Go to https://www.build-a-thon.devpost.com/
  • Click Submit Project
  • Add your team members, description, and code links
  • Include screenshots or demos

Video Demo

Your demo video (2–3 minutes) should highlight:

  1. What your project does
  2. The problem it solves
  3. How it works (a short walkthrough or demo)
  4. Why it matters

Keep it clear, concise, and creative! You can use tools like Loom, OBS Studio, or Zoom screen-recording.

GitHub Repository

Finally, include a link to your GitHub repo. Make sure it:

  • Has a clear README.md explaining your project
  • Includes setup instructions
  • Lists any APIs or frameworks used
  • Contains your license (optional but professional)

Good documentation shows judges you’ve taken your project seriously.

Final Thoughts

Build-a-thon 2025 isn’t just a competition — it’s a learning journey. You’ll meet new people, pick up new skills, and maybe even create something that changes the world.

So grab your laptop, fire up VS Code, and start building. The next big innovation could come from you.
